Origin

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is one of the most powerful and ancient mantras in Sanatan Dharma. Its primary reference is found in the Rigveda (Mandala 7, Sukta 59, Richa 12). Its seer (Rishi) is Vashistha. This mantra also appears in the Yajurveda (Taittiriya Samhita) and the Shiva Purana. It is widely known as the 'Rudra Mantra' or the 'Mrit Sanjeevani Mantra' because, according to mythological history, Sage Markandeya preserved his life from Yamaraja through the power of this single mantra.
