Hare Krishna Mahamantra
Meaning of the Mantra
This Mahamantra is composed of three divine names of the Supreme Lord—'Hare', 'Krishna', and 'Rama'. It contains 16 words (32 syllables). It is not an ordinary mantra but a call from the soul.
Hare
The vocative form of 'Srimati Radharani', the divine pleasure potency (Hladini Shakti) of the Lord. It means 'She who steals away all ignorance and distress' and connects the soul to Krishna.
Krishna
Literally means 'The All-Attractive'. It is the name of Lord Krishna, the complete avatar of Lord Vishnu/Narayana, who is the source of absolute bliss.
Rama
Means 'The Source of Supreme Pleasure' or 'He in whom the yogis rejoice'. It indicates Lord Ramachandra and the bliss-giving aspect of the Divine.

Origin
The primary scriptural source of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra is found in the "Kali-Santarana Upanishad" belonging to the Krishna Yajurveda. In this Upanishad, Lord Brahma instructs Sage Narada that there is no better way to destroy the sins and ill-effects of the age of Kali (Kaliyuga) than chanting this mantra. In the 16th century, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the founder of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, propagated this mantra to the masses. Later, in the 20th century, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (founder of ISKCON) spread it globally, making it universally known as the 'Hare Krishna Mantra'.
